Actress who plays overprotective, overbearing 1980s mother, promises “belly laughs and warm fuzzies” on ABC sitcom
After spending the better part of two years living in the past, Wendi McLendon-Covey‘s role on ABC’s “The Goldbergs” makes her a strong contender for an Emmy nomination in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy category.
The show has already been renewed for a third season, and in an interview with TheWrap, McLendon-Covey reflected back on Season 2.
Below, the actress reveals the funnest episode to shoot, the toughest thing she had to do, and what prompted the phrase “We’re like the Lennon/McCartney of mother/son modeling teams!”
What was the toughest thing you had to do this season?
Everything about my job is a pleasure, so the toughest thing for me was filming our final scene together as a cast. I can’t even watch it.
What was the most fun thing you got to do this season?
Shooting the episode where my delicious son Barry (played by Troy Gentile) gets “discovered” by a modeling scout at the mall was one of the most fun weeks I’ve ever had doing anything. Of course my character tries to get in on the action, and the whole episode can be summed up by the following line: “We’re like the Lennon/McCartney of mother/son modeling teams!”
Let’s assume that somebody has never seen your show. What would you say to persuade them to watch it?
Our show is perfect for anyone who likes to experience belly laughs and warm fuzzies within a 30 minute span. Yep … it’s THAT GOOD!
Who else on your show really deserves an Emmy, and why?
George Segal deserves a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Emmys, the SAG Awards, the Golden Globes, etc.
Are you a binge-watcher, or a once-a-weeker? What was the last show you binged and how many hours did you go?
I’m a binger! The last show I binged was one of the “Real Housewives” shows. I’m too ashamed to tell you how long I watched.
If you could add any new category to the Emmys, serious or silly, what would it be?
There should be awards for the most enthusiastic stand-ins, the most resourceful props department, and the most unflappable DGA trainee!
