Wendi McLendon-Covey Deserves an Emmy for ‘The Goldbergs,’ Is the Funniest Woman on TV
The Emmy nominations voting has begun, and while we can predict some of the usual awards season favorites, we have a few of our own picks — first-time nominees and under the radar picks alike — who deserve the honor this year. We’re highlighting six of those stars with video mash-ups of their best work, for your consideration.
Wendi McLendon-Covey is the funniest woman on TV right now. For real. Yeah, just let that sink in a bit.
If you didn’t catch the first season of ABC’s The Goldbergs, you missed out on McLendon-Covey’s smother-happy mom Bev, who wears the pants in the family (seriously — her TV hubby Murray, played by Jeff Garlin, is rarely in more than tighty whities) and isn’t afraid to do some down-and-dirty parenting.
As Emmy nominations are being decided, we thought we’d highlight McLendon-Covey’s range of comedic dominance — from maternal to dishing out the sass, from wrestling to busting a move, all done with inimitable ’80s style and perfect timing.
While the Goldberg clan gets credit for awesome blast-from-the-past references and storylines that feel incredibly true-to-life (probably because they’re based on creator Adam Goldberg’s real life), it’s McLendon-Covey’s Bev that brings the heart, week after week. If you didn’t have a mom like her, you definitely grew up with someone who did.
AMEN! Let’s hope the Emmy Voters are reading this.
