The Goldbergs’ Wendi McLendon-Covey offers up rejection advice

Fans of The Goldbergs recognize Wendi McLendon-Covey as the overprotective, fiercely loving matriarch Beverly Goldberg. Beyond the small screen, the actress has starred in Bridesmaids, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, and The Single Moms Club (to name a few). But it was an almost appearance in a film that provided McLendon-Covey with this piece of advice:

“Rejection is God’s protection,” the actress says.

For EW’s Greatest Story Ever Told video series, the actress recalls a film she was flown out to Michigan to act in after auditioning and landing the part. But when she arrived, the director thought she was “ugly” and the actress was sent home. Little did she know, that rejection would lead to an even bigger part down the road.
